wow what a frustrating week. to start things off all the sudden out of nowhere my comp stopped working. it would load the windows screen and go blank then eventually stopped loading anything at all. took it to the repair shop turns out my motherboard went.. $350 im back online. they couldn't save any of my information on my hard drive for some odd reason so i lost all my pictures and some music... everything else i can download again..
then my cornsnake hasn't been eating good the past 3 weeks, 2 things happened. 1st i had her on fir bedding which i didn't even realise that i had bought that but it is supposed to be extremely bad for snakes. then one of her last feed attempts i noticed she possibly got bit or somehow got injured on the inside of her mouth? she didn't eat 2 weeks ago then she ate a rat fuzzy and she didn't eat this week. well yesterday i wanted to check on her and her mouth was hanging open and when i picked her up she was making a weird clicking noise and wheezing noise.
i scheduled a vet appointment that same day. called the vet at 6:30 am and had an appointment for 5:20 after work. vet was extremely busy and i finally got in around 7pm. turns out she does have some type of abrasion inside her mouth causing discomfort and the vet didn't say she had an RI but gave her an injection of baytril and antibiotic cream for me to rub on her mouth and oral antibiotics for me to give her every other day. just after yesterdays shot alone she has improved drastically. she shed last night, pooped, and was drinking tons of water. still hoping for the best for her on her road to recovery.
sorry for the long post been busy and everything kinda came out jumbled.
i have a quick question about giving the oral antibiotics. the vet said and she showed me how but she took a rubber spatula and opened her mouth and said i could do the same for the antibiotics. my question couldn't i just take the syringe and put it in the corner of her mouth til she opens it and squirt it down her throat? the plastic wouldn't be too hard for her would it? thanks for any help.

Congrats that everything is working out!
p.s. about putting something in the side of their mouth, remember their air hole (esph) is in their mouth..this would be risky. The Vets way seems to be the best way: to bypass that entirely and get it into their stomachs.

There is no problem using fir bedding for snakes (guessing you are referring to fir bark, as I have never seen fir shavings or shredded fir)
And yes, the syringe is hard enough to break teeth if you try to put it in the side of the mouth. And just squirting it in her mouth is a bad idea...if for no other reason than most of it will just spill out. (not saying there isn't a risk of aspiration, but Deb already said that)

yes i was referring to fir bark, if its not bad for snakes then i have no idea why she got sick all the sudden.
the oral antibiotic ointment that i was putting on her face caused her skin to discolor so i stopped using it. she shed again for me about a week ago. so 2 sheds in less than 3 weeks and her normal coloration returned. she seems perfectly healthy. her appetite has returned in full..
i tried using a soft tip spatula like the vet suggested but found her teeth were becoming stuck to it and it was almost impossible for me to give her oral medication.. the 1st 2 doses she only got about half and the rest spilled out of her mouth. the last, i injected a pre killed rat fuzz and fed her a day early so by the time she digested it the medication would get to her on time. everything seems to be going good with her now.
thanks for the replies.

ZooMed Reptibark = fir bark...and I have been keeping my albino bloods on it for 7+ months (only because I couldn't get any cypress mulch at the time, lol - Reptibark is too expensive...luckily you can clean & reuse it ).

I just remove any solid waste, put it in a big strainer, and run hot water through it (and sift through it again to be sure I got everything out). As long as I am going to be reusing it on the same animal, I don't do too much more. Every few times, I will do that, then dump it in a bucket with a bleach/water solution, let it sit for a while, dump, rinse, soak in clean water overnight, and rinse again. (I like to be sure any/all bleach residue is gone ).
It can also be baked instead, to dry it & kill off bacteria, but I rarely bother with that.
It is a little bit of a hassle, but since the stuff costs like $20 for a smallish bag, I do it. I've been using that same bag of Reptibark since November, lol....guess I got my $20 worth out of it

its only like 10 a bag down in the southern part of NY for Reptibark and I used some and found it to be good substrate but I didnt want to clean it when the time came to clean it so I went out and got a different substrate to use.

We have the smaller bags here, too...."smallish" is a relative term, since I usually purchase 2 cubic ft bags of mulch or 4 cu ft bags of aspen. The Reptibark bag I purchased was one of the larger ones available (if not the largest), but it probably wouldn't be enough for two 32qt sterilites.
