I do breed both my own rats and ASFs. The cost would be horrendous if I were to try and buy prey each week to feed my babies.

I was reading around and found a handy "Heloise" hint.

Put big boxes of Baking soda in the Rat rooms to absorb smells! Very Happy

*now why didn't I think of that?? Embarassed

I have always done my own prey rodents. I did start out with the frozen that I got at the expos, my snakes wouldn't eat them, maybe the smell?? I just started this weekend with the ASF rats, still learning about them. I was told that they don't stink like the other 'normal' rats do. They are not very friendly, even know they are pups. Maybe they will warm up to us.

As far a guinea pigs, no way man! They stink for sure!! When my bp is big enough I am going out for the 'free kittens'

ASF do stink Laughing and since I have a lot of them they stink a lot. I have about 6 per cage (ratio of 1:5) and clean weekly or bi-weekly and the cleaning never ends Laughing .

nutter butter..... Sad

This is the only reason that my hubby and I decided on them. The normals smell so bad, we have to have a fan by their cage sucking out the stink!! I clean them up weekly to bi weekly, and I do spot cleaning inbetween. I even give them the no odor ferret drops in their water (which did help mind you but not enough)

Since I am new to the ASF, do the males mark everything they walk on like the normals??

Not that I have noticed, but mine are in steel tubs (enclosed with screen tops) so I can't see what they do. But cleaning time come around, the pee is always in one spot, so I tend to think they don't.

I would breed my own rodents if I lived by myself. I'm sure I wouldn't be bothered by it, but my family is. So Ima wait until I move out to breed for myself and maye add another BP or two >_>

(I swear just one isn't enough)
