There are many species of reptiles that require extra care and attention before being sold as pet. i.e most bearded dragon breeders would not sell them until they're at least 3 weeks old because they require higher attention labels as in basking, eating, etc. How old do you think a ball python should be before being sold? or how many meals? weight?

Thanks for your sharing your opinion! Smile

Well I wouldnt buy one that isnt at least 4 to 5 weeks and known to be eating well and has shed. But its more important to know if it is eating and gaining weight.

I agree to that. I got my firsta few days ago, when he was a couple of days over 5 weeks. Asked to see him feeding on my frist visit (4 weeks old)... even asked the breeder to keep his first shed. Laughing caution above anything.

I chose: depends on their weight, because like some breeders, I prefer to wait until the hatchlings are established as eaters. By this, I mean that they recognize prey when it's tossed into their tubs and are big enough where they aren't easily stressed. The reason I wait so long is because if they leave me and go into a stressed environment, it will take longer for the impact to be felt on them, and gives time to help the customer correct his/her husbandary..it also gives enough time to prove that there was nothing wrong with the snake itself as far as general health wise and eating habits.

Some sell them so young, that I wouldn't recommend them as pets for the novice. It can be extremely difficult to help a hatchling that is not established as an eater to overcome the stress of the shipping, change of environment and begin eating. It is difficult for one thing, because they do not have enough fat stores on them (IMO) to go long without food.
