Hi guys/gals, this is one of the latest additions to the family. He's name is Oreo (first three pics before vet visit)

Got him from my local pet store (provider of my live feeder mice). Before I got him I noticed his skin was really dry, but I was determined to get him bc he has such a great character, not shy, will let me pet him, playful. I asked the store owner to drop the price down and explained Oreo's skin condition (I already own another hedgehog). He tried to sell me a phony excuse and had a huge argument about it (that a hole)

I still took Oreo home with me. I just felt too bad for him and knew he will be 10x better with my care. Plus he wouldn't let go of my hand

The first three pics were taken a couple of days after I got him. He wouldn't stop scratching his face. Scratching so hard some skin was coming off and blood was showing.
Took my boy to one of the baddest vets in the midwest http://www.exoticpetvet.com/ they found microscopic mites in him and he was on medication for two weeks. He's doing great now and gain so much weight

He also likes to bite my fingers, and lay on my stomach

I know I'm not suppose to buy unhealthy animals but I couldn't let this little guy suffer in the pet store.
I told myself I would not give that pet store any more business. I'm currently trying to switch all my balls to f/t mice/rats

Wow! Now that's one animal that I never considered acquiring myself. How are they as pets? I've never heard of microscope mites before either, thanks for sharing! Very Happy

Oh, they're great pets! They like to walk all over the place and smell stuff. They're really quite except when they run on their wheel. They sleep almost the entire day and eat and run all night. When I watch tv, they like to go under my shirt and sleep.
Microscopic mites is very common in hedgehogs. They don't really live on the skin, more like in it.

Thats awesome..My friend has one, we make mazes for it with video tapes and at the end is his food. But then he figured out that he could just plow over the video tapes. I am pretty sure my friend smuggled him into Ca from Arizona or something because they are illegal here. But I could be wrong.

I saw some in my pet store where I originally got my breeders..but they were so stressed that they weren't displaying any personality (just balled up and prickly) So, I bypassed them.

This looks like an amazing animal. My hats off to you! Very Happy

Awww he sooo cute my teachers has one african hedgehog and I took care of It for the entire school year in science class, ( she also has 2 rabbits and like 5 hamsters and 4 guinea pigs. I loved to hold him in a blanket and give him little slices of banana =)
