It is a very painful thing that is why I said it isnt a death that I am very fond of thinking for anything, but if your gonna kill that is one way to insure it will die. I prefer the ruler to the back of the neck and lifting up till it cracks, but that is me, but I feed live anyways and only had to do that once or twice now when she refused the mouse and then I froze it till I could give it to a friend who has a corn snake who feeds frozen thaw. (talking about mice here)

I personally like Nicks method of putting them in a bag and smacking them on something hard. I have only had one rat out of about 30 that didn't die right away and even then he was pretty much dead just twitching. I have only had one that bled after I did it he was dead but had some blood coming out of his nose.

The only problem i've ever had with this is getting them into the plastic bag. It's like they know what's coming and they freak out. I've had a couple get away from me this way.... Embarassed

So you just smack the bag with the rat in it on something hard like the floor or a counter? And that works? I'd be afraid I would just break it's leg or something?

BTW my rat pup is still alive. I bought some rat food and I've been soaking it in milk/cream and he seems to love it. I couldn't get him to drink enough milk by itself so this seems to work. My snake only eats live too.

Hahaha.. I read somewhere that that method could be dangerous to your snake. I read that bones break and they can break of sharply and then when your snake is constricting or consuming it the bones can actually pierce through the rat/mouse and stab your snakes body, mouth or insides because your snake compresses it down. I do not know if this is true but I image that it could be possible.

you get it right Cool post a vid! i know you were not stating you could kill a large rat but to me even a rat pup which this topic is about IMOP seems pretty unbelievable. to me a rat pup has eyes open and pretty close to being weaned. a rat baby yes i can see that.

Like, I said..I have done it.

No Vid is fortcoming Laughing I suggest that you just try it yourself or ask someone that keeps hundreds of rats and has tried different ways of dispatching them.

Freezing is a good way to kill a animal if you want to do it, but the only problem with it that it is slow and I don't know about you, but freezing to death isn't a great way to die for me and probably not for you, better to make it quick and easy for the animal. I understand that you don't want to see it but sometimes to be most humane is to do it yourself and get it done quick and then you can freeze it.

I don't know Arly, I tried that ONCE. It was a BIG rat..my rats get jumbo sized...and I didn't have any dry ice around and her teats were HUGE..she was in obvious pain. I had heard that freezing was painless, so I thought, "why not?"

I have a big freezer that I use for rats, mice...prey. I put her in there (no I didn't knock her out first, I listened to someone that supposedly knew what he was doing. I am glad that I didn't hear the poor thing running around in the freezer trying to escape the cold, she didn't die easy, she gnawed herself to death. When I opened the door, the freezer was a vision of a bloodbath; this was MY experience with freezing live prey. You are right, it is a VERY slow death (or maybe my freezer wasn't cold enough).
I learned something: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LISTEN TO. THE INTERNET IS A MEDIUM ON WHICH EVEN THE MOST MORONIC PEOPLE CAN AND DO POST ADVICE THAT SEEMS INTELLIGENT.

This I know, most of the time, people are saying do this or do that, they haven't done it themselves, they are just saying that they have. The fact that some details are missing (you have to have done it to know which details are missing) shows me when someone is talking hot air.

i may be misreading this and i know we all learn from our mistakes or the mistakes from OTHERS but you said you were glad you couldnt hear her running around? did you just throw her in the freezer? i know animals will gnaw themselves when they get trapped, i hope this wasnt the case but was it possible that either her foot or tit got stuck to either metal in the freezer or ice? that would be the only way i could see them gnawing themselves. thats a sad story. maybe i will start knocking them 1st.

i leave just a tad bit or air in the ziplock bag so they cant chew through the bag and it takes about 30-45 mins or so until they are dead. im not sure what they die of first, running out of air or freezing to death. either way im glad i dont have to do it too often. i might try the dry ice thing, that seems like an appropriate method. pretty quick too.
