I got my snake two rat pups on Sunday but he only ate one. I tried feeding him the second one last night but he refused. My question is what do I do with this rat pup so it doesn't die or suffer from malnutrition before my snake decided to eat it? Right now I just have it in a shoe box size tupperware with holes in it. I tried giving it some water, cheese and cucumber but it wouldn't take it. I tried some milk today and he seemed to lick some up. I don't know what to do. I feel so sorry for him because he must be hungry and scared and I don't know if Reggie is going to eat him anytime soon. The pet store will not take him back. Any advice?

You could use a dropper and feed it watered down milk or cream every 1/2 hour, but this might get you attached to it. The majority of the people freeze any left over animals that they aren't prepared to keep till the next feeding and thaw it out when ready to feed.

Exactly how do you freeze leftovers Deb do you "kill" them 1st or what is the method used?

Fill first, it's more humane. To kill: A sharp rap on the head with the handle of a knife (I use feeding tongs) or a sharp flick with your thumb and middle finger should do it.

Most do, wait till the rest chime in to be sure, or send Buck and Nick a pm. I haven't been freezing. I have too many snakes, so if anything isn't eaten, it's usually tossed instead of frozen.

i dont think flicking a rat in the head will kill it.

im sorry call me a sissy but i would rather put the rat in a ziplock bag throw it in the freezer and not have to watch it die. inhumane or not. i can knock a rat unconscious no problem so my snakes can eat without getting bit if the rat is crazy. ive already had to kill like 20 rats my bps wouldnt eat... i cant do it anymore. im still technically killing them by freezing them but i dont have to watch them die.

wtf thats pretty sick...just freezing them to death. At least like put it in a brown paper bag and smack it against the wall or something (then you don't have to see them die). Freezing to death would suck.

i havnt had to kill 20 rats more like 3 or 4 but thats not the point for me the point is i dont want to have to kill them. so since i have to im going to do it by freezing them from now on until i find a different approach.

i have knocked them over the head before and sometimes if not done perfect the first time it could take 3 or 4 times, how mean is that?

please let me know how you do it after multiple snakes and missed feedings attempts happen. im comfortable with freezing them, if youre not its ok. people are allowed to disagree.

blahhhhh i don't know how you guys can do it i'm impressed, if its was me i'm afraid if i do it to hard or something guts and other stuff flys everywhere but then if i hold back to much it would be half dead and twitching n stuff. i don't think i have that balance point where i can do a successful kill. THANK YOU FT! lol

we all have our own ways of killing rats. i have had to put down alot more than you have and i dont have a problem with it. before i started keeping cages for the rats i would have to put down a few a week. if it was a bad week i would have to put ALOT down OR bring them back to the breeder... most i ever put down in one day had to be around 15.

i place them in a plastic bag, slam them against the wall one or two times real quick and then put them in a food saver bag and use the food saver to suck all the air out. if it doesnt kill them ( normaly does) they will be knocked out and wont suffer as much when they are put in the freezer.

another method is to get dry ice. get a small cooler and place the dry ice in a container that is vented. place that container at one end of the cooler and the rats in there. they die quick and its painless
