Cleaned out Ty's cage today in the middle of meaning after I took the old substrate out and was gonna start putting it back together Idont have another bag forgot to grab it at the pet store so all I had was either newspaper or pine, so Ty got newspaper and it sucks to look at and it pisses me off. Sorry. But I am thinking of upgrading Ty to a tub soon and give my rats the 20l because they have a nasty habit of getting out of there cage now but we are hoping with a extra 10 lbs or weight on it that they will stay in there now. The issue is the heat mat wont come off the bottem of my tub now without taking off the sticky stuff any advise on how to get it off the bottem with the sticky stuff or anyway I can keep it on the tub in the future when I switch?

Well you can't really do it without losing the sticky stuff, but if you get it off just use alluminum foil tape to stick it on to the tub.....

Be careful...a lot of times the heating element ends up getting damaged when trying to remove a UTH. It might not work, it might work for a while then stop, or it might overheat & melt the rubber (smoke + stink)
Probably the easiest way is to use a scraper to get underneath it & separate it from the tank...using minimal prying action, even though it is tempting. If you want to make the job easier, get a good adhesive remover & apply it once you get an edge separated.
*Helpful hint - MAKE SURE IT IS UNPLUGGED BEFORE TRYING TO REMOVE IT!! (you might not have needed that, but you'd be surprised at the stupid things people do)

I am wary of newspaper as a substrate....... just looking at how the ink comes off on your fingers....... what sort of chemicals are in it, and could that possibly be healthy for your snake?

I'm sure it's fine temporarily. But have you got paper towel? That also makes it easier to spot stuff that shouldn't be there.

I don't like newspaper either, for that reason. I'm not sure the ink ever makes it inside, though. I've got a guest albino right now, and the newsprint dirties him up right quick. You can really see it on his yellow. As soon as he sheds, though, it's gone. He's on aspen now.
