17 pinky rats when I came home today... and they all had every limb!

Last time there were 7...ish. It was hard to tell since most were eaten and/or missing limbs. There were two rats in the cage (besides mom) last time. One being the babies' daddy, and the other was a misplaced feeder. One of those rat bastards ate the pinkys.

This time the misplaced feeder has already been digested, and the father must not have been hungry. I removed him now just to be safe!

I am going to trade them in (hopefully) for some bigger and better things!

Is 17 a pretty normal amount?

What do you feed your rats? How are they getting to the food? Is it extremely hard for them to get the food (big chunks and small screens)?

You may want to look at your set up and see if you can make the food easier to get to and more varied. That may stop the cannibalism.

Congrats on the pinkies! Very Happy

I'm just feeding them cat food. It is easily accessible. I'm guessing it was the 2nd male that was in there last time.. not the father. He didn't eat any this time!

Ah. I see.

I believe in the Animal Kingdom, that a male that is not the sire may eat whatever babies have been born in order to ensure that his own seed will have priority care?

I never put a "stray" male with any of my females that have litters, but I do leave them with any male that was the breeder (by which I mean for exampe, in a rack of 1:5, I won't remove the male). In the event that I get a rogue male that is killing his own seed, then he's dispatched and I do not put another male with those females until their ratterlings are out of the cage.

Anyway, congrats! Smile
