|
Alright so I just bought my first ball python yesterday! She is gorgeous by the way, and her name is Jenna. Anyway, I have some questions about her new home. I've done my research but im still not sure. I have a decent sized glass reptile aquarium, a heating pad underneath, one hide spot on the heat side, a water dish that is a good enough size for her. and the bedding. I need to know if i need to buy a lamp (heat or light only), another hide spot, or even a bigger cage, and i dont know what to get as far as a hygrometer and thermometer. She is only 1 1/2 -2 years old. Plz get back to me as soon as possible and thank you!

It would be helpful if you posted a pic of your set up, so we can make suggestions. Include the kinds of thermostats, humidity gauges, and thermometers.
Just telling you to put in a light might do more damage.
So I suggest you start a new thread asking for help with your tank set up. (and PICS)

Ok, you saw the sticky on setting up the tanks.
I don't see the thermosat or the humidty and thermometer with probes..please read the sticky and provide a picture with these items.
BTW, that is a very nice looking BP.

i dont have a thermostat, but there is a wall thermometer on the back which im sure is crap....but i also have a lamp with a 50 watt bulb that provides heat and light and it works pretty well with maintaining the temp however she usually comes out of her hide spot after a while cuz i think it gets too hot inside of it. and how much do you think a thermostat would cost? and thanks for the comment on her

There is a thermostat section (sticky) that pretty much describes what's out there and a search of the names mentioned would show pricing. Please make use of our FREE search feature. The search button is your friend, really.
Someone will be along shortly to expand on whatever I missed. But I want to say a few things to get you started in the right direction.
Having a UTH with no thermostat is dangerous for the snake and can cause a fire (I do not care what the directions say, we are speaking from experience either our own or others).
Having a light "heat" coupled with an uncontrolled UTH in the animal's environment is (imo) really, seriously just an accident waiting to happen and asking for a trip to the Vet.
Finally: You say that you are sure that you have a crappy thermometer yet, you are telling me the temperature of it...how funny is that? Seriously,,,I am joshing you, but the ambient temp isn't the one you want. You want the substrate temps before ambient ones. There are some very nice reliable ones in Walmart that shouldn't cost over 8.00. There are some pictures around here. Here's a pic of one:
Here's another good one:

Cool thanks. But should i even get a thermometer or just a thermostat that can regulate the heat (for the UTH and the light), and read the substrate heat and the humidity.

The thermostat is a must, there is no option about it. If you can find one that does all these things then one should be enough. BUT back up is always a safe decision. So I would still get a separate one that read temps and humidity.
*moving your post to it's own place now.

You should get both.
Most of the inexpensive Tstats don't even show temperatures, and the ones that do show the temp at the probe.
