|
My momma gave birth to 12 little pinkies. they've been fine for about three weeks now, but suddenly, the little babies have been falling off. So far, five have died. is there a trick to this! am i supposed to seperate them from their mother at a certain age? Do they have strict diets and I'm giving them the wrong type of food for babies? I'm giving them hamster and gerbil gourmet diet. guy at local petstore said sure... temps are above 70, but they're dieing. Don't know, help meh!

pdig69,
I don't know what to tell you other than this exact same scenario played out in my prey room with my mice...twice! I never did solve it and have given up on mice in the near term until I have a chance to do further research.

AhhA! Atleast it happened to someone else, I was hoping I wasn't alone here, being a bad father. Everything in their setup is ok, temp, water, food, and I clean weekly.
My hypothesis on the situation is,Tthere wasn't enough fresh air in their big rubbermaid container. I don't think their little lungs were able to cope with the gasses from their pee and poo, I had the rubbermaid top closed because they learned how to climb out. Only one died when I had them in a tank with a mesh top and he looked like he was smothered, then five died a week later when I put them in the rubbermaid. I've now granted them a fan and drilled holes into the rubbermaid. I think this was my mistake... Would you agree?
They didn't appear eaten or crushed Nick, just the first one seemed smothered. I found two dead today and one was half in half out, dazed and alone. I think this should solve my problem with the new ventilation system I've installed.

Rats! I should breed rats. lol Evil indeed, their eyes are piercing! Rats would be more nutritious, yes? Do they die quicker when my bp's feed? Are they less likely to attack when in the rubbermaid with my bp's? I would love to breed them for the one purpose, they are better for the bp's.
