A story to tell to those who complain about Iguanas being salmonella

14 people sickened after playing in downtown S.J. fountain

Mercury News

San Jose has shut down the fountain at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez because
health officials suspect as many as 14 people became sick after playing in
the water there.

A news release from the city says the fountain ``was the common
denominator' ' for five cases of a cryptosporidium infection and eight to
nine cases of salmonella. Both are transmitted by contaminated food or
water.

The fountain was closed effective Friday and will remain closed until
``health and safety concerns are addressed,'' according to the release.

Local health officials are conducting tests of the fountain water.
Cryptosporidium test results are expected by Friday.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite and salmonella is a bacteria.

City officials say the sand filtration and sanitation systems and manual
application of cleansing chemicals are ineffective for preventing both
cryptosporidium and salmonella. They are developing recommendations to
modify the system in order to ``minimize or eliminate'' outbreaks in the
future.

(now I guarntee you that that Salmonella wasn't put in that fountain in
downtown San Jose by an errant iguana!)

Funny, Laughing but it leads me to think of other issues that are connecting...Ooooo the leg bone connected to the knee bone and the knee bone connected to the thigh bone...etc...anyway..

How about in swimming pools? Does this mean there is no guarantee way to ensure that swimming water is Samonella and Cryptosporidium free?

I would believe that salmonella could not live in a swimming with chlorine in it. I think the chorine would kill it.

Then why didn't they put chlorine in here? Question

San Jose is a city where you drink bottled water. Seriously, I'm not joking here. That water is just not good for people. Their sanitation systems are too small for the population, and this fountain thing is probably an example of what's to happen in the future.

if Iggys were the culprit then why aren't there any cases of salmonella reported in countries that Iguana's run wild ( The Virgin Islands?)? I swear some people just want to place the blame on something that can not defend itself (I can see it now--* The City of San Jose vs. Iguana* - that would make for an interresting trial)

True, true. Everytime there is an outbreak of some new disease, illness, or bacterial infection..there needs to be a source and when the facts aren't known..we'll make up some! Razz
