hmmm interesting, well I'll look into getting a better substrate for them, but I dont plan on feeding them to the snake they are pets so no danger there. Well at least till they piss me off again and then maybe one will accidently fall into the cage after a thorough bath.

Do you, with the pet rats, clip their nails? Those things are sharp as heck!

i know this is old but i'm going to post again anyway.
i do clip nails on as many of my furry friends as will tolerate it. my rat isn't enthused but she'll put up with a bit at a time. same with the cat and the male gerbil.
Deb, i totally hear you on the pet stores. i'm still trying to figure out why they STILL carry cedar but i think enough of them have been catching grief about it - i'm starting to see cedar at least make its way off the shelves. the "kiln-dried" pine doesn't seem to be going anywhere. supposedly its okay but i'm not convinced.

Changes come slowly, but they do come!
Update on my "pet" attempts. George and Wheezy are not afraid of me, George lets me pick him up willingly. Wheezy is a bit more flightly, but she doesn't bite (hasn't yet). They sleep and play together. As this experiment progresses, I may give them pet status and move them upstairs in a big cage with toys.

Is that ASF full grown? The size difference is a shocker!
And yeah, I have 4 rats as pets (and hopefully future breeders). The first on was meant to be food, I was in the process of dangling it infront of my bp who was just starting to take intrest wehn my room mate came home saw what I was doing and saved it. She said that the rat was too cute to die and started to cry, so I let her have it. The next day she brings home another rat (and 2 feeder mice to make up for the missed meal) and she says tis rat is a female and they can have babies and I can take the babies. This is her way of apologizing. The next day she is playing with her two new friends and I take a look at the new one to discover it is another boy. My room mate is now distraught that she cannot to good on her word of letting me feed off baby rats, which I tell her is fine but she would not listen and she drags me with her to the exotic pet shot this time so we can get the correct sex rats, in other words 2 females because she has bonded with the other two. She set the rats up in pairs, two in one cage two in another and named all four: Pixie, and Ratatouille as one piar and Cinnamon and Oliver as another. All four rats have been handled daily and actually are pretty good when it comes to using the bathroom, as they keep it to one corner. I placed paper across the whole bottom of their enclosures and then shredded some more for them to make their homes with as well as giving them a little box to sleep in so they are happy rats.

Actually neither of them are full grown. They are both "teenagers." But for all intents and purposes the rat gets bigger and the ASF doesn't get too much bigger.
They are the same age.

my friends that got married this weekend have 2 pet rats. one is a dumbo and one is hairless. they are both females and about 2 1/2 years old. they let them run around down stairs from time to time and they mostly just chill by you or around the couches. they were trained ( dont know how) not to poop anywhere but in the cage.
coolest thing ever really, i didnt expect to like holding them but they just relax on you and lick you like a dog

I put mine out in the grass the other day. He just kept running back to me. He also loves to just sit on my shoulders.
The female takes anything I throw into the cage and runs it back in their hide. She especially like shredded newspaper and chocolate!
The male never craps outside the cage unless I am giving him a bath. He's not real fond of baths!
The female craps anytime she is nervous! Kind of like a kingsnake!
