I know several members use vanilla extract to help keep down the smell of rat and mouse urine by adding vanilla extract to their water. How many teaspoons or tablespoons do you add per gallon and have you noticed any difference in odor by using this method? Also, do you use imitation or real vanilla extract? Thanks.

Yes it works....i can tell the diffrence now that i have run out..i use an ample about ( like how a chef uses a pinch ). i always use extract reason being that the pure is so strong i dont know what it might do to the "insides" of the rat (personal fear have not researched it yet).
thanks for the reminder Ron after i get the rats tonight i need to get some more LOL

I use either artifical flavoring or extract, depending on which is less expensive. They both work equally well and there is viritually no smell if the tubs are also cleaned regularly.
I also noticed that it depends on how many rats I have in the tub. If I have over 5 then the smell is porportional to the amount of urine that is deposited into a particular tub. It doesn't smell of ammonia, but it is still a strong smell if let go uncleaned on a regular basis. (I noticed this when missed one or two regular cleanings.)
Being of the mind that if less works, more is better (not always ) I use 2 tablespoons per gallon (now that I have started measuring). 2 tablespoons makes the water slightly brown...it's noticable when compared to clear water. Now I have to find a way to pipe it into the automatic watering system!!
