Hi guys I'm Fred. I'm ordering my first snake/ ball python for my 21st this month. I've decided to go with a normal male ball python.
Any advice is appreciated. I've read and reasearched alot about the ball python so I think I have a good base.

Hi Fred! You've come to the right place. Ron's Blog (link right next to "Ball Pythons for sale") in the upper middle of this webpage has a ton of information. That's a great place to start.
And...as always, if there is subject on which you need more detail or information, we are here to help!

I can't decide between aspen, coconut husk(eco-earth), or cypress (zoo med forest floor betting). Any idea on what would be ideal?

If your planning on using a glass tank go with cypress since it holds humidity a lot better. I use shredded aspen on all my snakes but they're all in plastic tubs and humidity is not a problem there and aspen is also easy to spot clean. I haven't try coconut husk but I hear is good too. Try searching the forum I think there was a whole thread about substrates. Good luck

Welcome To RC Racer Freak!
I Have Used Most of The Ones You Mentioned And They All Work Great.
I Haven't Used Eco-Earth.
Any Roots To Your Name?

Welcome!
Good luck with your setup. I use aspen as well; I use a big tank so I had humidity issues but I put in a humid hide instead of trying to raise humidity in the whole tank and that`s worked out fine for me so far.
I highly recommend getting the tank finished ASAP so you can give yourself a couple of days to make sure you can get temperatures and humidity in a good balance *before* you get your snake in there.
Post some pictures once you`ve got a setup going, we`d love to see and give some advice if you need it!

o0o... so my girlfriend, who has a burmese python, told me she ordered me a ball python for my B-day. However, she won't tell me what kind or what gender it is. So I guess I'll find out when it arrives on my B-day.
I think I'm going to buy a go down to target and buy a sterilite tub. I'll put it in that for the first month and then switch it over to the 10g tank I have. Any recommendation on hides? I found these nice abs hides on reptilebasics.com or i'm thinking about the half a log hides.
As far as the name goes it's just a name I use for other forums. Plus I love cars.

I am, naturally, a fan more of tubs than aquariums for BPs. So, I'll let those with aquariums and tanks take the lead in this.
I'll be close by when you return asking if your snake has an R.I.

Half-log hides are not great because they leave your bp too exposed, being completely open on both ends. An ideal hide is just the right size for your bp to fit into with not too much extra room, and has one opening just big enough for them to get in. A hide that lets them be closed-in and unobserved gives the best chance for a stress-free snake.
These are my personal choice:

I ordered these small abs hides from reptile basics
Any recommendations for heat pads? I figure I'm gonna go with something small 3-5 watts. I was thinking about the t-rex cobra mini or hagen exo terra desert heater... the exo terra is $3 cheaper.
