Could some one help me out here, I've looked everywhere, but I don't see anything about Ball Pythons being illegal in Indiana. I -know- it's illegal to release wild animals into nature in most places, but is it illegal to OWN a ball python here in Indiana? Confused

I don't see any laws against it posted online. What makes you think they might be illegal?

Quick way to find out: call around to some pet stores. DON'T BUY FROM A PET STORE! (unless you want a stressed out snake with parasites or worse) But do call around...they'll know.

Another thought: check your county or municipality too. For example, I live in Virginia where hot herps (i.e., venomous) are legal, but I can't own hots in my county. We have a few counties here where no snakes may be legally kept, and others where they have to be under a certain size.

If you can't find the info online, let your fingers do the walking.

FUN ACTIVITY: Call your representative in Congress for the info. I have found that representatives will surprise you with how far they'll bend over backwards for a vote.

I'd start with the city first. The city I reside in has a ban on any snake over 3 feet in length.

I of course, ignore the law. Cool

I know of several keepers/breeders in Indiana - people I'm pretty sure wouldn't be doing it if it was against the law, lol. As Buck mentioned, though, there can be local laws at a number of levels (county, city, town, village).

We have a lot of law officers in the herping community. For your sake, I hope none of them from your neck of the woods reads this. Cool

I'm posting a topic in the General Topics thread that some of you may want to read. Just kind of what reptile keepers around here (Ohio) go through.

Apparently they only enforce it under extreme circumstances, like people bring them out to scare neighbors etc...
