New to the site, haven't had alot of time to do much here yet, but have a question about a female ball I rescued/purchased/re-homed, lol from craigslist. This big girl(Mrs. Monster) has an all white belly, Hersheys Dark chocolate colored back, and it was proposed to me that she might be a black back?
Thanks for looking

Thanks, in any case she is a beauty, 6 years old, one owner, lol, and weighs 1900 + grams.
I'll divulge the other details after I hopefully find out what she is, thanks for the welcome

I said the same after I posted it, lol, "she ain't no used car" I said HaHa, as I wanted to edit the post. Laughing
In anycase, I have a shot at a male like this one(so I'm told) and if this is a black/brown back, then I may just pick him up. If not I'll breed my male lemon pastel to her, and see what turns up : )

Doesn't look like any black pastel I've ever seen (and I would feel safe in saying it isn't one).

As for whether it IS a black back...I guess that depends on whether one is using the term as a descriptor or a "morph". Some black backs (used as a descriptive term there) are reproducible, some are not. I am not into BPs enough to identify or describe what characteristics are present in the "genetic" ones - maybe somebody else can help out in that regard.
Either way, its a nice looking snake. Unless you have a particular interest in working on refining that trait, I would just put her with the lemon pastel (that kind of back stripe looks great on a pastel, IMO)

That is probably my plan, she looks like she'd make great babies with my lemon pastel, and probably what I'll do with her, unless I'm told she's something genetic. A beautiful snake, that's tame as can be, even if she won't breed, she's a sweet heart. Thanks for your answer!

Welcome!
She's really nice! She does look like a black back but I think the only way to really find out is by breeding her, to see if its a genetic trait.
But like Magana says, I can also be wrong, I'm still learning. Nick or another mod is your best bet.

WELCOME!!! Very Happy

That's a great looking animal! Did you purchase her from a breeder as a Normal? If so, it's probably already been bred and proven Normal.

It's hard to determine which snakes with black backs are genetic. Some breeders have produced Black-Backed ball pythons at "random" and some Black-Backs have been produced from Black-Backed parents.

I have noticed that there are different kinds of black backs..........some seem to have pure black stripes and some seem to have a more brown/burgundy color stripe. When trying to prove an animal out it's important to try to match up the animals that share the same characteristics.

Nick should be in shortly with more information. Smile

Yes, I did purchase her as a normal. The guy who had her, his wife divorced him and left state, it was her snake, and he didn't want to care for it(bad memories) so he thew her on craigslist.
They had this girl(they had no idea on the sex) from a baby, bought from a petstore, didn't ask which, should have maybe, lol.
She came with a 40 gallon critter cage and heat mat underneath.
I am pretty positive she's never bred, they said she was 6 years old, this I believe, she is 1900 + grams and just fed ferociously yesterday : )
I have access to a male that looks very similiar to her, now I'm not sure whether to get him, or just put my pastel with her, and go for some cool lookin pastels.
Normal or not, she's in a happy place
