I was just wondering what everyone used for bedding for their rats and or mice (I have both at the moment) and any helpful hits and tricks as how to keep them from not being stinky because unfortunately at the moment they have to be kept in my room. I am changing their cages every 2-4 days. It is not that they stink really and at 2 days they are still fine, but you know they are there if you get what I mean.
At the moment I am out of bedding and my car is K.O. so I have had to have them on newspaper/shredded newspaper for the past week and a half and while it makes cleaning easier still it only gives me 2-3 days. but my car should be better in the next day or so so I am going to make a shopping run. What would you guys suggest so I can make the time betwen cleanings maybe 5 days. So bedding ideas and other hints and tricks would be super. Thanks!
Just so you all know they are all kepts in glass tanks, I have a breeding trio of adult rats in a 20gallon long, 2 small rats in a 10 gallon, around 9 mice in another 10 gallon and another 12 in a third 10 gallon. The last tank with the 12 mice I am using to feed from while I wait for my rats to produce babies, I am hoping to have them gone and the tank free to put the weaned pups in.

Baking soda is supposed to cut down on the smell.

I put 2 tablespoon per drinking bottle as I learned how to balance the water vanilla ratio to suit my own needs.
Experiment a bit, it can't harm them..but make sure there's more water than vanilla.

To clarify: Not to drink...use it similiar to how we put the boxes in the refridgerator to cut down smells. Simply open the box and leave standing near the smells.

In my own opinion, newspaper isn't a good substrate for holding smells, and tanks do not allow enough air circulation so you may be dealing with a heavier concentration of ammonia.
Shredded Aspen is very good, it gives me breathing space.
