|
This winter I will be breeding an albino ball to a pastel. I have been reading up on breeding and have found articles on egg binding on smaller snakes. In the couple cases that I have seen the balls were just about 1000 grams. Is it worth the risk to breed her when she's just over the 999 mark? Or is egg binding something that I shouldn't be too worried about? BTW, this will be her third winter. Any opinion is appreciated.

You should try to get her up to a minimum of 1,200 grams at least. I wouldn't risk breeding smaller females because I've heard too many horror stories about some laying only one egg and others dying from becoming egg-bound. They need fat reserves for the follicular maturation and egg creation process. You still have some time to get additional weight on her so increase her feedings accordingly.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron. Maybe I'll start offering food every two and three days, instead of every 3 to 4 days. I'll keep you updated to see how she’s gaining weight. I actually haven’t weighed her in about a week; I'll weigh her tomorrow!

What morphs would you be able to produce by breeding those two?

He'd produce Pastel het Albino hatchlings. They would look like pastels and normals except they'd carry the Albino gene.

I believe a Pastel Albino Boa has already been produced, I haven't heard of a Pastel Albino Ball... (but then I don't know everything!)

They were first produced in 2005. I was told that a Super Pastel Albino was produced this year but I haven't seen any photo's of it yet. I should produce some pastel albinos next season since my pastel het albino females aren't big enough to breed this season.

BAD REP??? The Berm is a sweetie...it's all in the handling. Sadly some youngsters are getting them, and of course they are thinking several things that they do are 'cool'...so....... a rash of incidents are giving the Berm a bad name. But i have a friend that has 2 Berms and they sleep in her bed with her, go swimming with her, and go on their own too. Yes..they make conscious decisions to go to the pool and they get in on their own and swim. She showed photos! lol
In a nutshell, I think animals take after their owners if they are pets. Breeders is another topic.
