|
Mrs. 99 and I would like to thank Nick for driving down to Richmond to help me build a rat rack. In truth, Nick is way handier than I am, so he did the building and I helped. We used the plans available in the link here.
For most of the day the camera went unused. Here is Nick installing the casters once we were almost done:
Here is the final product:
...and its first tenants:
Nick also brought down his male albino ball python for a pairing with my female het albino. Hopefully I'll get front row seats for some hot BP on BP action in the reptile room soon.
Nick also handled Captain 20, my latest GTP. Unfortunately I forgot to get photographic proof. Captain 20 was easy to handle but didn't want to let go of his perch. Nick saw that the tough part is not hurting the snake. Nick also showed me how to "pop" the male ball pythons (i.e., hemipene inversion), and we determined that my spider BP (Mr. Wibbles) and pastel (Ward) are both ready to rumble. I just need my one key female to get back on feed and up to weight and I'll be in business. Popping is something I've needed to practice for a long time, and it is valuable information.
Nick walked away with a breeding pair of hooded rats, and I'm pretty sure the female has already been knocked up.
Thanks again for all your help and knowledge, Nick. You saved Mrs. 99 and I two weekends at least (we're kinda slow).

Buck i loved coming down and helping out! it was nice getting some "guy time" and being able to do what im good at.
i will state the GTP captian 20 is really chill and calm i ended up holding him for about 10 min until we went to the "rat area" and then i gave him back ( have a fear of holding snakes around rats LOL)
i hope this helps with the rat breeding and caging they have a lot more freedom and it will be ALOT easier to take care of them... no more glass tanks.
thanks again buck and tell Mrs. 99 thanks for lunch again

Awesome guys! Those racks are so handy and those big tubs give the rats plenty of room and are very easy to clean. (Heads up: they can chew though them even though there are no lips..so be watchful). I have had two tubs chewed though so far, luckily for me, my rats are tame enough for me to get them back when they get out (however when I first started..it was rough when they chewed out. Now that I have I fed off my chewers, I don't really have that problem anymore (knock on wood).. so far.
Buck are you going to put an automatic watering system on it? It will REALLY free up some time. (if you do install the AWS, remember to get the pressure regulator or you will have drowned rats)
Nick is was so neighborly of you to stop by and help a fellow herper..that is SO like you.

Yeah, I'm going to put in a watering system, but I'm going to use the bucket approach. If you think about it, though, the bottles force me to check in on them often, so I can keep an eye on the chewing. Regardless, where's the best place to get the components for the system?

Yep, I agree. The bottles force us to check more often, and if you put vanilla in each bottle would cut the smell in half..you can even do that with the bucket. I clean every week, but sometimes some females may be giving birth, so I leave them alone until they are done and the pups are eating...so that can get a bit gamy.
For myself it's a personal reason...having to check water every 2 hours..they drink fast really hampered my freedom...and restrained my ability to move about freely (travel as needed)
I got my equipment from Klubertanz Equip co. 1-800-237-3899 They have an online order form too: http://www.klubertanz.com I got everything from here, including the automatic water pressure regulator.
Regardless of what you decide...swell rat rack..better put together than MINE!
