Educate me, Nick: what makes him a black pastel and not a normal?
I need to make index cards so I can memorize this stuff.

are you talking looks or genetics?
genetics = when bred to a pastel they make a pewter, when bred to another blackpastel or cinny they make a solid black ball. there are more but you get the jist.
looks, cinnys and black pastels both have a look to them with one alien head with little black "squigglies" ( tiny lines) above them. black pastels tend to be very black and cinnys more mocha colored...

Man, I just look in the book or do a Punnet square diagram! But I came across a description for you:
Black Pastel Ball Python (Python regius)
This is another incomplete dominant mutation, with the super form being an anique solid blackish-brown snake known as the Black Ball or Eight-Ball. A number of interesting morphs have been produced using this mutation in combination with others, the most coveted of which is the Silver Streak Ball. Black Pastels bred to Cinnamons have produced Eight-Balls, so this trait is allelic to Cinnamon.
a quick search will bring up a pic..but Nick's pic is a good representative of the morph.
p.s. It looks like a Normal to ME too...I haven't been too interested in them as a morph, but I am developing an interest in them as a project.

You definitely have the "eye," dude. Right now, without educating myself, someone could easily sell me a normal as a cinny or a black pastel and I'd be none the wiser.

Me too! I think something is wrong with my normal ball python? It looked like this yesterday:
and now it looks like this today. Is that normal, could my ball python be sick?
