Recaptured lizard may go to zoo

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A 5-foot crocodile monitor lizard that escaped from its owner could find a new home in the St. Louis Zoo.

While 18-year-old Zane Donaho wants his pet back, his mother thinks the animal would be happier in the zoo, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. She only learned she would be sharing a home with a large reptile with very sharp teeth when the lizard was delivered after Donaho bought it on the Internet for $500 in May.

The lizard got out of its cage June 15 and vanished. It turned up six weeks later less than a mile from the Donaho home.

Like many reptiles, the crocodile monitor is a skilled hunter and good at fading into the background. Experts believe it kept going on local birds.

Steve Brown, president of the St. Louis Herpetological Society, said the lizard looked well-fed when it was captured. The society has temporary custody of the lizard.

Owning large lizards is not illegal in St. Louis. So, while officials agree with Donaho's mother about the zoo, the issue is between mother and son, who is currently living with his father in Texas.

I am sorry but if one of my kids decided to take it apon themselves to bring #1 anything into my house without asking and #2 a lizard of any kind, I think I would be going to jail because I would have to shoot something.
