I have an alternative to screen tops for anyone using an aquarium.

I have always used racks for my corns and bp's, but recently I filled those racks up lol... This is funny, becuase somewhere on here there's a direct quote from me saying I'm only going to own these two snakes and no more! Anyways as I said I recently filled up my racks, and don't have the time to build anymore so I bought a couple of 20gallon longs for a while. I have a hard enough time finding a place to put these in a one bedroom apartment let alone try and mess with humidity and what not. I have three of these now, one has the Jungle Carpet in it, and the other two are corns. They make pretty good displlays I might add.

So I was thinking instead of having a screen top and covering it with a towel and cardboard why not get something solid. I went to lowes last night and found a piece of Melamine (the same wood my racks are made of) and cut it to fit inside the rim of the aquarium. Then I bought some screen door handles for about $3 and put one at each end. I then drilled some holes in one end for ventilation.

These tops work great, because not only do they hold humidity well, but there heavy enough that they can't be pushed up by any snakes that I own. The boards are 3/4'' thick so pretty heavy and durable.

HERE ARE SOME BETTER PICS.

I see this is an older post...But hey! It could be a solution solver...So how is the humidity issues? Do you notice a big difference with this cover you made verses the screen?

Pretty cool thinkin' you did there...

Yes I notice a pretty big difference. I don't use aquariums for bp's, but I have a couple of my Corn snakes in there, as well as the JCP. With the overhead light and uth, it stays about 45-55. Without the light anywhere from 50-65. It all depends on where you place the water bowl and how big it is etc.

I use the diy humidifier for all of my aquariums. It works great and is very cheap, the humidity stays at about 65 with that.
