BTW, by the end of the conversation, I felt that we had reached a good understanding. I had even sent her a link to this site. I hope to G__ she doesn't come here now and click on this topic. It will undo everything I tried to accomplish.

I have explained to my daughter that this is their way of life. She understands that everything has to eat. She gets excited when he strikes, but understands this is how it is. She has been taught that talking about our snake's eating habbits are not to be discussed unless the person she is talking to is interrested in them also. She has a friend that likes to come over and wants to see the snake eat because she has never been around snakes. I kinda use peanut as an educational tool. He has gone to her school a couple of times, and the #1 question asked "what and how does it eat?" Alot of kids do get "sick" when they hear this, but I explain that it is the circle of life. They understand this if they have watched the Lion King. But Debbie is correct, alot of people do not understand this. I normally ask them well how do they eat in the wild? This is not an uncommon thing. This is the reason I have started breeding my own mice, that way the kid in the pet store is not tempted to ask why I am buying lots of mice. Kids are more understanding than adults. This is why I explain all I can to kids, that way when they grow up they might be a little bit more understanding of this little game we call LIFE.

You're dead meat then! lol Seriously, Debbie. I understand what you are saying. I am blessed with the ablility to see all sides of a story and explain mine without suffering a stroke. Laughing

I thought that the child's (LUKE"S) remark was funny, I didn't take it the way you did, because I know kids say the darnest things. But you do have a good point, we wouldn't (my focus is on the child now) want her to grow up with no respect for life. Remember Jeffery Dalhmer, guys! Crying or Very sad

As to the age old battle of F/T versus Live that is only everyone trying to justify their way of doing things instead of adopting the mindset of "live and let live." BTW: I do not feed live rats to my babies. I feed f/t or p/k or stunned. BUT...I do admit that there are some people that shouldn't have snakes...chiefly because they have no respect for life in general, rats or the snakes.

I, myself, do not believe that responsibility has anything to do with the choice of feeding f/t or live..because responsible owners can supervise if feeding live and be on hand for any incidents (that in itself is a display of responsibility in my opinion).

Education of the masses is still the key, but we must do it without becoming heated (pissed) lol You have explained your stance and a very clear worthwhile stance it is. However, we must be careful about how we go about it ( this is for us all) it is very easy to subscribe to a (my way or the highway) inflexible way of thinking. I do it myself sometimes.

You have my permission to flame me, and not Debbie. Cool

It was a very enjoyable experience to have that debate over feeding mice/rats to snakes. This woman was very intelligent, and acknowledged the need for feeding prey to snakes; her argument was basically the way it was done (i.e., feeding live). I posted only part of my conversation relating to responsible feeding. I did include (in our discussion) the feeding of live prey to snakes that refused f/t, including p/k or stunned, and also talked about feeding live, and why it was done. When we parted company, I felt as though we had reached an understanding, of sorts, although we still each had our own issues around the subject.

You're right, if she does show up here and reads this, I am dead meat! Smile MY issue with the comments of this recent post(s) was the way Luke presented it (taking "pride" in his daughter's [thirst for gore?] as evidenced by his following statements) and the general comments. But, my point with this whole thing is that we, as "responsible" snake and reptile owners, have a duty to educate people. This is a public forum and Lord knows who pops in here. Reptile owners are under attack from all sides, and I for one, don't want to lose the fight to own my babies. I know that we should be able to have fun here, and I like my fun time too, but some things should not be looked upon as "funny."

Okay, I'll get off my soap box. I know there are people here who are responsible owners and who do everything they can to educate others in responsible ownership.

I stand corrected and thank you for reminding us of our duty. Some things should not be looked upon as funny.

I am sorry Luke for my part in encouraging this dialogue. I am not going to attempt to tell you how to raise your daughter, but I hope this was just her joking way...I do know that my kids as young as 3 had a sense of humor!

I remember when I was telling my grandson to be careful of his hands around the refridgerator, and he said, ok, Nana. Then when I looked around his finger was caught in the back and he was "screaming" his head off (I am deaf) I ran to him to open the ref and he pulled his finger out and started laughing!! OH! the little rascle got me! I just jumped on his azz and started tickling him....so I took your story in the spirit that my grandchildren show.

Children can be marvelous tricksters! They are also very good mimics. Laughing Please do not be angry..we care.

This is an example of a childs rationalization, that's why i didn't take it seriously:
After a hardy rainstorm filled all the potholes in the streets and
alleys, a young mother watched her two little boys playing in the puddle
through her kitchen window. The older of the two, a five year old lad,
grabbed his sibling by the back of his head and shoved his face into the
water hole.

As the boy recovered and stood laughing and dripping, the mother runs to
the yard in a panic. "Why on earth did you do that to your little
brother?!" she asks as she shook the older boy in anger.
"We were just playing 'church' mommy," he said.
"And I was just baptizing him.
....in the name of the Father, the Son and in...the hole-he-goes."
