Ok, this has happened to me on two occasions. I have bought two uths, one set for "desert" envirments. And the other set for "tropical" emvirments. The tropical one doesnt seem to be putting off any heat at all. I have removed all of the mulch from the area that it is placed, hoping for my bp to get the most heat from it as possible. And it still barely even helps. And even on the box it says to be careful that the uth might cause burns on your snake or lizard. Well in my case, my bp could lay on top of the uth and not even get burned. I bet she wouldnt even get warm!

The desert uth isnt that bad though. I have about 1/2 inch of mulch where that uth is placed and the temps are about right where they are supposed to be. I just thought I would of needed at least 1 or 2 inches of mulch there to keep my bp from getting burned.

My question is, has this happened to anybody else?

i hope you have a thermostat on that. they may not seem to get warm BUT can have a spike where the get 130 + and it will cook your snake.

they have hot spots on them so watch out for those too.

both uths are exo terra. and its a glass tank. and i think 8 watts. Im not completely sure though. They are about 6x8 inches. and about the uth cooking my snake. Well if the snake feels like it is being burned or cooked alive, wouldnt it move to another hide? I know that bps dont have nerves on their bellys but wouldnt its whole body feel warm if the temps spiked and hit 130?

No. Sad
Ron has an excellent blog that explains it. http://rcreptiles.com/blog/index.php?s=burn&sentence=AND&submit=Search
