You could use a dropper and feed it watered down milk or cream every 1/2 hour, but this might get you attached to it. The majority of the people freeze any left over animals that they aren't prepared to keep till the next feeding and thaw it out when ready to feed.

Exactly how do you freeze leftovers Deb do you "kill" them 1st or what is the method used?

Fill first, it's more humane. To kill: A sharp rap on the head with the handle of a knife (I use feeding tongs) or a sharp flick with your thumb and middle finger should do it.

i dont think flicking a rat in the head will kill it.
im sorry call me a sissy but i would rather put the rat in a ziplock bag throw it in the freezer and not have to watch it die. inhumane or not. i can knock a rat unconscious no problem so my snakes can eat without getting bit if the rat is crazy. ive already had to kill like 20 rats my bps wouldnt eat... i cant do it anymore. im still technically killing them by freezing them but i dont have to watch them die.

Get it right. Cool It may not kill a big rat, but pinkies and fuzzies do not need that much force and I have done it many times. Of course, my prefered method is using the feeding tongs rather than my fingers.

I do not care how you kill your rats, but you are in error if you think that flicking will not kill a ratterling (baby rat)

I've decided to try to keep the little guy alive until I can try to feed it to Reggie again. So far he has been drinking a little milk so that's good. I might try to see if Reggie will take him tomorrow. I wanted to wait until Friday but I don't know if the rat will make it until then. So far he seems okay but he's so young that he can't be doing that great without his mama.

Freezing is a good way to kill a animal if you want to do it, but the only problem with it that it is slow and I don't know about you, but freezing to death isn't a great way to die for me and probably not for you, better to make it quick and easy for the animal. I understand that you don't want to see it but sometimes to be most humane is to do it yourself and get it done quick and then you can freeze it.

Yah I would never just toss them in the freezer that is pretty inhumane and cruel.

well im not saying to kill it slowly but the fact of the matter is that it is going to die as long as you kill it or freeze it in a way that satisfies you there is no need for discussion....

I don't know Arly, I tried that ONCE. It was a BIG rat..my rats get jumbo sized...and I didn't have any dry ice around and her teats were HUGE..she was in obvious pain. I had heard that freezing was painless, so I thought, "why not?"

I have a big freezer that I use for rats, mice...prey. I put her in there (no I didn't knock her out first, I listened to someone that supposedly knew what he was doing. I am glad that I didn't hear the poor thing running around in the freezer trying to escape the cold, she didn't die easy, she gnawed herself to death. When I opened the door, the freezer was a vision of a bloodbath; this was MY experience with freezing live prey. You are right, it is a VERY slow death (or maybe my freezer wasn't cold enough).

I learned something: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LISTEN TO. THE INTERNET IS A MEDIUM ON WHICH EVEN THE MOST MORONIC PEOPLE CAN AND DO POST ADVICE THAT SEEMS INTELLIGENT.

This I know, most of the time, people are saying do this or do that, they haven't done it themselves, they are just saying that they have. The fact that some details are missing (you have to have done it to know which details are missing) shows me when someone is talking hot air.

Here's how I do it:

  1. Swing rat by tail and stun - death is preferred but stun will do - by smacking head on cement floor.
  2. Toss rat into tub with dry ice gas (I do not allow rat to come into direct contact with dry ice).
  3. Wait 10 minutes.
  4. Remove rat and place it in the bag.
  5. Seal the bag and place it in the freezer.
  6. Beg God to take mercy on my soul.

doesnt matter to me how its killed...as long as its somewhat fast. i feel no mercy ( does this make me evil? ) either it will die by hitting a wall at top speed OR by my snakes constriction. I am now set to keep them alive ( all but non weaned ) so i just feed live.

you get it right Cool post a vid! i know you were not stating you could kill a large rat but to me even a rat pup which this topic is about IMOP seems pretty unbelievable. to me a rat pup has eyes open and pretty close to being weaned. a rat baby yes i can see that.
