I'm finding people actually do that, and don't you guys think that's a little bit of a really bad idea? I love Rufio but I would never put him around my neck!

Yah a ball python no problem. It all depends on trust. I have had a 9ft burm around my neck and shoulders and it is no problem as long as they are tame and docile.

"Constricting snake" is WAAAAAAAAAAAY too broad a term, LOL! I said "yes" only because a BP is the only snake I have. I certainly would do that with anything bigger!!

The only snakes that I own are still very young. The next time I go up to my friends snake house where he has 5 8+ foot burms and a bunch of other stuff I will.

I understand the concern, it's been noted (somewhere on the internet) that a snake constricting on the neck only takes a few seconds to cause the wearer to lose consciousness.

I have no idea how much pressure this would take to create this result. As a rule, I never allow any snake that I place around my neck to "cross" or "coil." This means they can't constrict. I have Mo'Money that I do sometimes place on the back of my neck while I am cleaning his rack, but he has to dangle there or coil under my arms..not coil around my neck.

I hope this makes sense?

Obviously I won't do it with a large constrictor, but with ball pythons, yes. As a matter of precaution I always keep my right hand on the tail so I can get the snake unravelled quickly if necessary. Even so, I typically guide the snake in such a way that it's more draped over my shoulders than around my neck. I rarely allow them to complete a full loop around my neck.

I do not allow my children to have a snake around their necks.

That is exactly what I was going to write.

Plus, they can only hold them if I am present.

You're making sense now. Smile I see how you could had them more around your shoulders- sounds like a nice massage!

side note: I was picking up Rufio yesterday and he was making a very strange noise. I took me a long time to realize he was hissing because it was so small and pathetic! It was really cute though. He was on the move and didn't want to be interfered with Smile

I was looking for the resource that I quoted, and I can't find it. I retract my statement as I am not sure of my source anymore. However, I stand by the statement that I would not allow my snakes to constrict around my neck regardless.

There have been no deaths from strangulation from BPs, yet. However, they are stronger than they appear, and the reality is, if your neck is being constricted, you can be pretty weak if blood vessels are cut off. Whether or not their constriction has enough force to do this remains in question until someone is moronic enough to test the theory. Laughing

I agree that there is a "risk" involved with allowing him to curl around my neck. I dont think he would "constrict". It almost seems like the constrict is a reflex when he eats. I have only had Drake about 6 months and have never seen him strike if there was not a mouse or rat in front of him. I have also never seen him constrict without striking first. I am assuming everyone has differnt exp with their snakes. I only have 1 and he is a Ball. I feel safe with him as I do with my dragons. I do respect his power and know he could hurt me. I think any animal has the capability of hurting a human being.
