Hi gang,
I'm new to BP's and currently am using a cardboard box for my balls hide. I want to purchase a manufactured hide that will be big enough for when he is full grown. I'm looking at something like the Exo-Terra Reptile Cave:http://www.bigappleherp.com/Exo-Terra-Reptile-Caves?sc=2&category=7

What size should I get?

Also if anyone uses other pre-fab hides that they like better please list them and any reasons why you happen to like them.

Thanks in advance.
Laura

no need to get a hide that will last them until they are full grown, if it is to large its not a hide, just another space.

i use hides made by zilla and also make my own for some that are a little larger. for full grown balls that need hides i go to walmart and but the 2-4 dollar kittly litter pans ( short ones - height wise) and cut an entrance in it and your good to go.

Personally I Like Clay Pots as Hides.

Heres My Male Balls Hide (1000+Grams)

Here Is My Other Male Balls Hide (600+grams)

Pymama Gave Me The Idea And I Must Say They Work Great! They Also Keep Humidity Inside The Hide At 60%+ If You Dip Them Im Water and Let Them Air Dry For A Couple Of Mins To Let The Excess Water Run Off.

The clay hides are great! I used those in the very beginning when I was housing in tanks. I had a problem keeping the overall humidty up in the tanks, but I was rarely having a "bad" shed.

I used moss on the bottom of the "saucer" and turned over the clay pot on its saucer..layed the whole thing on the hot side and it was good to go!

*They come in a wide range of sizes! Very Happy

Thanks guys. The flower pot idea is great. How do you cut the whole bigger? What do you use to cut it?

hammer and chisel is the way I have heard of doing it and then using a file to even out the side and smooth them.

You Could Also Use A Die Grinder(if You Have One) To smooth out the rough spots or Do The Whole Thing With It , Just Remember To Wear Gloves And Use A respirator!

All things being equal, it would depend on if they were both the exact same kind of hide with one simply being a big bigger than the other. Otherwise other factors come into play.

I love terra cotta pots. I have one of those big ones with the holes on the sides at random intervals for my big girl and she loves it to peices. She will wind herself through one hole out another back in and out again and lay her head on top to watch everyone pass by. I have to get a picture of it now, cause I think you guys would love it.

deborahbroadus, I was curious on what you use for hides in your racks.

i use some shoe box hides i use for a few animals ( i cut a shoebox in half and the top in half and tape it and cut an entrance, easy disposable hide)

i just realized i could use the 12 pack fridge pack for soda cans to also do this. i was letting liz buy new shoes all the time because she loves them and i will have a never ending supply of quick hides that i can make any size. well now when i realized i could use the soda boxes ( we go through alot) i also save money because the wife doesnt have to buy shoes Smile

I use several different kinds. Below are examples.

I just converted a snack can that is round and wide into a humid hide and glued black paper around it so it gives her a little sense of security in the tube while she is in it and cut a hole in the top of it and put spaughum moss in it. Works great and keeps the moss out of my substrate so anything that you find around the house can be used to make a hide out of if you do it right.
