How to Wire Flexwatt

Flexwatt is a cheap heat tape used primarily for snakes, by snake breeders. It gets quite hot, but is easily controlled by a thermostat, and is good for optimal electricity utilization.

The best thing about Flexwatt is that it can be cut into 6 inch increments, making it highly customizable. The only downside is that it must be wired manually when purchased.

If you balk at the thought of having to wire the Flexwatt, don't. It is actually a very simple and straight forward procedure, and is quite simple to preform.

Flexwatt comes in three different sizes: 3 inch, 4 inch, and 11 inch. I always recommend getting the 11inch, as it provides the best distribution of heat, instead of a small centralized heat.

Once you have purchased the desired amount of Flexwatt, you need to cut it into appropriate lengths for your need. It can be cut into increments as small at 6 inches. The tape will have marks where you can make cuts. Be sure to cut on these lines only! Flexwatt is wonderful for heating, but it done incorrectly, can be a fire hazard.

Once you have the desired amount of Flexwatt cut, gather these materials: wire cutters, pliers, sharp knife, and electrical tape.

Step 1: Tape the extension cord you wish to use, and cut the end that does not plug into the wall (female end) off. Throw that part away, as it is useless.

Step 2: Using the sharp knife, cut the extension cord down the center to separate the two wires. Be sure to cut between the two connected wires, so that they are both still encased in plastic. Do not cut into the wires! If you accidentally expose any of the wires, use the electrical tape to cover the exposure. Pull the wires apart approx. 1 foot (12inches).

Step 3: Using the knife, remove the insulation from the last two inches of each wire. This will leave the copper wire exposed. Twist the exposed wire, then fold it in half, so that you have a nice thick area to clamp on. This insures that the connection will be adequate.

Step 4: Now take the metal connectors that came with the Flexwatt, and push the wire into the bottom slot of the connector. Using pliers, squeeze the metal over the connector until it is thoroughly crimped down. It's not difficult, but if you are not strong enough to securely clamp it, get someone else to do it for you.

Step 5: On each side of the Flexwatt pad, there are thin metal strips. These strips are what we will connect the clamps to. Take the metal clamp, and place it over the end of the metal strip. Using the pliers, once again, tighten (crimp) the clamp securely onto the metal strip. The connector should have small bumps that will perforate the metal strip; be sure they press entirely through it.

Step 6: The Flexwatt is now fully functional. If you plug it in, it will do what it is supposed to do. However, if you or anything else were to touch one of the exposed metal strips on ends, you would get a 100+ volt shock. This is where the electrical tape comes in handy. Use a strip to fully cover all four corners of the Flexwatt, so that no conductors/metal is exposed. This is very important! All metal and exposed wires must be covered in electrical tape.

Once you have finished with this, plug you Flexwatt into a thermostat, regulate the temperature, and enjoy!
