How many of you have BP's that are so particular about what they eat that they will only eat certain color rats or mice?
What evidence do you have to bear this out?

I'll answer first.
Since I have so many, my answer will be general..based on the majority. I have 2 WC that will only eat live Gerbils with any regularity regardless of color. One that will only eat f/t mice regardless of color (used to eat rats)
The rest of them don't care what color it is. If it's warm or breathing it's a Happy Meal!

I've got one that has scars almost from head to toe from a bad rat attack with the previous owner. He said the rat that did it was dark, and she won't take dark rats. I've tried dark rats with her several times and no dice. Mind you, she's not a regular feeder anyway...she seems to wait until she's desperate before she'll consider eating, and then it's always white prey, and it has to be live, and it has to be crippled in some way. I stun them. If the prey is running around, forget it, she balls up. If it's stunned dark prey, she doesn't ball up, but she does retreat. She's averaging a meal per month.
She's an '04 and right around 1000 grams. Very small for her age because of this incident. And butt ugly.

So far mine has only ate a white mouse, and she did a great job at it, got her to eat it last night, I video taped the kill and first part of the eating, I am trying to upload it, I will post the video later.

my son did a science fair project on that. he tested it on my normal female, and on her it did not matter what color mouse.

if i had hairy hands i would be a little nervous! mine doesn't care, she'll eat any mouse live, not dead, and only after i let it go in the tub with her. otherwise i could dangle it right in front of her nose and she will just wait for me to drop it in and as soon as it hits the ground it is over.

Well I have to agree with Nick a mouse is a mouse and rat is a rat! Gary finally ate for me last night and it was the same black small rat that i've been trying to feed to him for the last month or longer. I was going to try a mouse as some had suggested but I really don't think it would have mattered what it was I threw in there he was hungry and the stars were aligned so he ate it. I will have to experience with the different colors as the pet shops around my area always have different sizes and colors everytime I go in there so we'll see what happens......
