|
My latest acquisition, a male from Southern Chondros. His name is Captain 20 unless I think of something better (and almost anything would be, right? ):
As a hatchling:
I picked him for his personality. He and I bonded from the get go. Really easy going and curious, and extremely at ease when handled. I met his mom...all Carolina blue (hormonal) from nose to tip of tail (except for a perfect white underbelly), and coiled up on branch she was about the size of a basketball. Anyway, the pictures above capture his pattern brilliantly, but his colors are much more vivid in person, and the green is much brighter.

My snake, but not my photos. Pictures taken by Kim Burge with a black backdrop and umbrella strobe-flashes.

Ok, I'm gonna leave the poor little guy alone now, but I got some shots. They're out of focus (my camera is fickle and can't decide from day to day if it's going to be a good camera or not), but the colors seem more true, especially on the second shot:
...and here's Ted hanging out with me while I refill his misting bottle:

Wow I'm blown away. Absolutely stellar. Yep, that is one nice toaster.
hehe, really though, everytime I see GTP pics I check my bank account and think about how I would rearrange furniture to accomodate one. Nice going Buck.

Thanks Mike, we sold some old musical instruments and one of the kids' beds to afford it, but since it can do four slices at once and features an automatic cancellation button, we figured it was worth it.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, and I hope for the sake of my family's welfare that this time it will be true, but I'm all done buying snakes for awhile. I have enough BP's now for some interesting (if not particularly rare or valuable) combinations, and up to four combinations of GTP pairings. I learned a lot talking to Captain 20's breeder this weekend, though, and harbor no illusions that there will be any sort of GTP orgy going on in my reptile room. They sure are some finicky creatures! So if I'm extremely lucky, Ted and Elaine will begin their romance this fall (Elaine has to step up her feeding regimen), and it's at least a year before the Captain can get in on the action, and at least two years before Lilly can get busy (the rule of thumb is both 4-years old and 1000g for females...people try earlier and get eggs but mostly slugs and not many surviving hatchlings). So two years from now I should have two males and two females, all sexually mature. Right now only Ted is ready to go...watched him, um, please himself on his perch once following an experiment where I put he and Elaine together for a while to watch how they would react to each other. Ted figured she was a goer and got right to work, but she fled the scene and grounded herself, so I removed her. Meanwhile Ted seemed to think she was still there and got busy with nobody but himself for the better part of an hour.

Indeed, it's a fine toaster commonly seen in the trade. I only buy CBB toasters from reputable toaster breeders. WC toasters are simply too dangerous. I've heard horror stories where they've used their electric cord tails as whips, or plugged their tails into wall sockets before plunging themselves into human-infested bathtubs.
Mrs. 99 is cool with The Captain because she has a strong preference for the greens. This one literally took her breath away when I brought him home, so all is well. She also knew where I was going and that I might be returning with a snake. What happened was my band was playing a show in Raleigh on Saturday night, and since I was going to be down that way anyway, I arranged to meet the breeder, Kim Burge, in person. I had my eye on a different chondro of hers from the same clutch (I was looking specifically at KB-06-05) before going down there, but Kim also showed me KB-06-20 (now Captain 20), and he won me over with his personality. Negotiations ensued and a satisfactory agreement was reached. Seems I've come a long way from just forking out the asking price, like I did at the Chantilly show.
Nick you gotta check this guy out sometime. He's not shy in the slightest, very curious, looks me right in the eye throughout handling so you know that he knows what's going on, yet he appears to appreciate it. He comes up to sniff my nose, allows petting around his neck and head, suffers sudden touches along the full length of his body without jerking or shying away, has made no attempts to escape me, and did this thing where he inspected my arm and then rubbed his nose roughly on it a few times. No mites or bad shed, I checked closely, under the lip, everywhere. Clean as a whistle. Apparently one or two of her snakes have done this in the past with her husband but not with her, so we think maybe they like arm hair. This is consistent with my observation that my chondros are more relaxed with me when I wear short sleeves, but they prefer sleeved shirts or sweatshirts over sweaters. Leather gloves appear to be a complete no-no. Weird animals.
I handled him twice at the breeder's place and once at home before putting him into his new enclosure*. He was easy going all three times. Fell asleep on my arm yesterday out on the front porch (at least I assume he was asleep: no movement for half an hour). He's just...cool. Can't wait to get home and just look at him for awhile.
Saturday feeding will be the first true test, since chondros can sometimes go off feed when their situation changes. But the transition was no problem for Lilly, and this guy is the biggest of the clutch and his feeding history shows why, so I'm optimistic. Also, Kim and I observed that he appeared to have a movement coming, and sure enough he delivered last night, so I can run a fecal.
Ok, I'll stop rambling about my chondros now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* I stick to the 2 week rule with my chondros just as I do with ball pythons, to reduce stress. However, I allow handling before introduction to the new home because I figure they've already been tumbled around a few delivery trucks and a jet fuselage or stuffed into a pillowcase and driven around in a car for hours and hours, etc. depending on how they're transported, so an additional few minutes of stress isn't going to be a deal breaker. So far so good on this approach with all my snakes, but Captain 20 is now in stress de-tox, if you will.
