Well, it's been an adventure. The very first litter was not successful because apparently the doe didn't have maternal instincts.
I now have THREE African Soft Furred rat litters and more on the way! I am very pleased. The thing about these rats that is most noticable is that they are way smaller than our American rats even as adults. I am inclined to say these are more like gerbils!

You forgot to mention how they make a chirping sound and hop around when disturbed.

They chirp? Mine don't hop..they run to the front of the cage to see what I got now.

Yep, they make a chirping sound if you pick them up.

I have some like that too..with the black popeyes.
The only difference that I have observed is that mine are Albino..and when they mate with the normals then they get some brown eyes, albinos ..a mixure of everything.
ASFs come in Normal and Albino.

Also I've noticed that mine have babies about every two weeks. I've had about 20 litters so for of about 14 per litter.

Steps:
- Click on Img button one time.
- An image open tag (withOUT the forward slash) will appear. It's '[' plus "IMG" plus ']'.
- Paste the direct URL location of your image immediately following the tag.
- Click on the Img button again.
- An image close tag (with a forward slash) will appear as follows: '[' plus '/' plus "IMG" plus ']'
OR...
...if you're using Photobucket, copy the text from the "IMG Code" box under your picture, and paste that in here. This already has the image tags in it, so you don't need to worry about the Img button or manually adding the tags.
I can't show you what the final result looks like because it will think I'm trying to attach an image. But the syntax is:
[image tag]direct url[/image tag]

You might want to give her a break and let her feed the little ones (remove the male) or she will be worn out before the little ones are fed, and/or not be able to nurse them all and some will die.
*Ain't they just like POPCORN?? They HOP everytime you try and pick one up.

I've pulled the male and given the mother about 4 weeks to nurse and lost the whole litter. It took the pair about 6 months to finally breed and they starve themselves if seperated. I have not figured that out yet. But I have about 20 breeding pairs now. So when they die I just feed them off to one of the 30odd snakes in my stock. But they do breed like rabbits. LOL And the male is the defensive one on babies. He attacks everytime I get close to them.
