That is odd, mine have not done that (starved themselves when I move them around); I wonder if they mate for life?
I think perhaps they just don't do too good on their own, they are community animals. It might have worked if you had another batch to put him with and in the meantime two females would have kept that litter taken care of.
Each of my males has at least 3 females and I rotate the females or replace them with fresh females as the kits get older. I currently have two bloodlines that I mix and match.
Live and learn...that's the only way.

I started out with just two but have since aquired several more unrelated pairs. Am currently trying to figure out if these are the species that is currently unlawful to possess in the fine state of Kentucky. The prohibited species is "Multimammate rat (Subgenus Mastomys);" Any way you could tell me the differance between the two? Or if they are the same strain? Thanks, Ratt

Not quite sure, I have started a research but time is short right now. Here is a beginning:
First follow this link for a possible picture of one. There seems to be several different kinds and they are listed at the bottom of the page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Zyzomys_pedunculatus.jpg
On the link below, it outlines a reason why they are not permitted.
www.doctorinternet.com/public/4-glossary/mesh-l.html
Lassa Fever
MS = An acute febrile human disease caused by the LASSA VIRUS.
AN = a hemorrhagic fever caused by an arenavirus
UI = D007835
Lassa virus
MS = A species of ARENAVIRUS, part of the Old World Arenaviruses (ARENAVIRUSES, OLD WORLD), and the etiologic agent of LASSA FEVER. LASSA VIRUS is a common infective agent in humans in West Africa. Its natural host is the multimammate mouse Mastomys natalensis.
AN = infection = LASSA FEVER
UI = D007836
If I am on the wrong track, perhaps you could do a bit more research and find the exact one that is being forbidden and a picture?
I too will keep researching till I find an answer, maybe Ron knows more?

That is more info than I or anyone else has found but I THINK that what we have are not the same as the ones listed as unlawful to possess. Thanks and I will let you know if I find anything else.

Well, the links you provided showed a rodent with a hairy tail and said that those were of the Genus Mastomys(prohibited) and here is a link I found that lists what we have as Genus Praomys(no prohibitations). Hope this is the right ones. LOL They look just like ours.
http://goto.glocalnet.net/natal/species.htm
I think I'll take one of mine to the local animal control and see if they can tell the differance.

In a conversation with a couple of TN residents a while back, I was informed that ASF's are prohibited there.
A quick search of multimammate rat yielded this page, which seems to confirm that (as well as answer some of the other questions posed in this thread): http://www.jirds.cwc.net/rag/profiles/nmmr.htm

Awesome information! Can yu get a picture of the one that is accepted down there? If I am reading correctly, at least one of these rats is similiar and accepted?
What's to stop anyone from selling them and calling them the other?

Deb, if that post is aimed at me, we are reading the page differently.
I see it saying that, while Praomys is the current genus, Mastomys is still recognized and the two are used interchangably (meaning they are the same animal). As far as different species are concerned - it doesn't really matter with regard to the law, since it is the genus that is prohibited (all species within that genus would be included).

Darn I knew I should have stayed woke during biology and science!
Ok...I get you. Now my question is, do you have a link that lists all the cities, states. etc where this animal is forbidden?
No, I am not trying to make you do my work..but obviously you are more familiar with the research clues since I wasn't getting what was needed.
