It's tough because there is ample literature available for proper care and maintenance to help owners avoid problems, but very little on first aid. Yes, emergencies warrant visits to the veterinarian's clinic, but what do you do until you can get there?
Does anyone have any good literature on this subject?

Im not an expert but I figure it would be close to this:
1. Assess the problem, figure out best you can what might be/what is wrong.
2. Apply first aid to any physical injuries you can see.
3. Keep the snake/pet as calm as possible, the less stress the better.
4. Have someone/yourself call the vet closest to you even if the vet does not specialize in herp care, something is better then nothing, worst case he can make some calls to a vet who does know herp care and can consult him on what to do.

Buck, I have numerous books, but from time to time, I return to "What's Wrong With My Snake" (someone borrowed it and I can't remember the author), Snake Keeping by Barry C. Nielsen and 277 Secrets your Snake (and Lizard) Wants You To Know by Paulette Cooper.
For bleeding emergencies, they would be handled in the same manner as a human...staunch the flow of blood with a clean towel, and get to the vet.
For R.I. They suggest raising the temps and get to the vet....you get the drift?
I am NOT trying to be sarcastic...but I am going to stop apologizing if someone takes a post the wrong way. It's all about perception.

No apology necessary Deb. I haven't seen those books, I'll have to look into them.

The first and last are at my library, I know. The middle one? I'll have to check.
I can't help but get anoyed when I see three topics on the same page all saying "Help me! I lost my ball python!" They don't even look to see if there's already a topic on in.
My older brother just got a two year old bearded dragon from his girlfriends brother who got it as a gift and didn't want it. Once again he refuses to do any research. He thinks it's good enough to ask the guy at the pet store. I went to the library to get a book on beardies and he wont read it! I'll got over to the bearded dragon page to rant some more.

Alive for the most part. It's been a while, hasn't it? Takara's doing good though. I got her a log for Christmas. She seems to really like it. She hides behind it when it's warm out because it's on the cool side of the tank.
Have we had any major tragedys since I went missing?
I saw the link in your sig. How many bps do you have now?

Good to know! Old sigs are always missed. Nice having the family back together. Good that Takara is doing well; that's always good news. Refresh my memory, how old is she now? and POST pics! (I haven't missed any have I?)
Sorry to hear the situation with your brother hasn't improved much...sigh....I am sure that you do the best you can as we all do.
Major tragedy: Nope, nothing that I would call a tragedy, but read the boards and catch up..a bit of drama here and there caused by misunderstandings, but nothing major. Same ole, same ole. All my snakes are alive and well, and no one else has had any crisis of major porportion. Old friends are still here, and we've met some new ones. You'll meet them too! Guys say HI to Mosha!! Lindsay drops in now and again...we hope things are still good with her.
I have 37 snakes now.

That's a lot of babies! I bet they keep you plenty busy.
I'll work on catching up with the local buisness.

Hello Nick!
Eh, we're off topic. What was the topic? Responsibilities of pet owners?
You get a pet, you do research on how to take care of it. Hopefully before you get it and especially once you have it. You can't know too much.
